Todorov’s Narrative Theory To understand and apply Todorov’s Narrative Theory to films aimed at children

TODOROV’S NARRATIVE STRUCTURE According to Tzvetan Todorov, a Bulgarian-French historian, philosopher, and structuralist, stories have a common narrative structure: Equilibrium – the story begins with normality. Disruption – a problem occurs and creates a disruption to the normality. Recognition of disruption – characters become aware of the problem. Attempt to repair the disruption – characters prepare to overcome the problem. New equilibrium – the final stage of the story presents characters with a new normality. Narrative structures

APPLYING TODOROV’S THEORY Stages in Todorov’s Theory Events from Shrek Equilibrium Disruption Recognition of Disruption Attempt to Fix Disruption New Equilibirium Equilibrium – calm on the island Disruption – a girl is killed by the shark Recognition of the disruption – Chief Brody investigates and releases the death is caused by a shark. Attempt to repair the disruption – Brody and Hooper try to close the beach

APPLYING TODOROV’S THEORY It is acceptable if the stages do occur but not in the order stated in the previous slide. Each stage can vary in length in time: Stages in Todorov’s Theory Events from Shrek Equilibrium Shrek lives alone in the swamp, with no friends or worries. Disruption Fairytale creatures appear at Shrek’s swamp, after they were kicked out of their homes by Lord Farquad. Recognition of Disruption Shrek is annoyed by the creatures, and sets out to confront Farquad, who is seeking a wife. Attempt to Fix Disruption Farquad sends Shrek on a mission to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon. Shrek and Fiona fall in love, but Fiona must marry Farquad to remove a curse. New Equilibirium Shrek and Fiona declare their love for each other, Fiona assumed the form of an ogress, Farquad is eaten by the dragon, and the film ends with Shrek and Fiona’s wedding. It is acceptable if the stages do occur but not in the order stated in the previous slide and each stage can vary in length in time: Equilibrium – calm on the island Disruption – a girl is killed by the shark Recognition of the disruption – Chief Brody investigates and releases the death is caused by a shark. Attempt to repair the disruption – Brody and Hooper try to close the beach
