Presentation transcript:

PROMPT: Describe reasons people migrate? Homework Writing Prompt (Due Friday, in class, printed) PROMPT: Describe reasons people migrate? Requirements: Use of 10 (or more) vocabulary terms, concepts, etc. that relate specifically to migration (essentially use those things we discuss today in class) At least 5 real world examples of migration patterns of any sort, even if they are unrelated to one another (this can be of anything you write about, and can include migration streams to primate cities, refugee streams, voluntary migrants who move for seasonal purposes, or historical movements such as the Great Migration.) At least 3 terms from OTHER topics that you can relate to

Content Review Rules As we review (verbally), please attempt to follow these ‘rules’ – not only are they directed at helping you writing your FRQ’s (worth 50% of your test score), but they will help with your part 1 knowledge as well. Answer questions as you would write them – we write how we think, so if your thoughts aren’t clear, you won’t articulate your points clearly. If you lack knowledge, it will be very clear on the written page, so avoid one word answers. Avoid, when possible, simplistic answers like ‘jobs’ to the question of ‘why do people migrate’, or ‘technological advances’, or ‘education’ – these are simplistic to the point of being meaningless, and they don’t show your knowledge of college-level concepts.

Migration Review (major concepts) Ravenstein’s Laws of Migration: list them, explain them individually, relate them to other concepts (when appropriate) Wilbur Zelinsky’s Migration Transition – the relationship of migration behavior to the demographic transition model and the core-periphery model (‘World Systems Theory’ – Wallerstein). International (a) vs. Internal Migration (b): what are the differences? Internal Migration has 2 types: what are they and what are the push/pull factors for each Intra-Regional (within) has 3 types: what are they, and for each tell me reasons why people migrate in that way, and expand on some examples historically, either domestically or internationally.
