Energy is defined as the ability to do work or cause change Work is done when a force causes an object to move in the direction of that force – Examples:

Presentation transcript:

Waves -There are eight different forms of energy: 1. gravitational 2. electrical 3. chemical 4. nuclear 5. thermal 6. mechanical 7. sound 8. radiant/electromagnetic -waves are a type of energy and typically fall under the category of mechanical, sound, or electromagnetic energy

Waves -Electromagnetic waves are ultimately light -There is a spectrum for the electromagnetism:

Waves

Waves -The spectrum is arranged by wavelength -wavelength (symbolized as λ) is the distance between two corresponding points -frequency (symbolized as v) is how many wavelengths pass a certain point over a given amount of time, usually one second

Waves -the speed of light is c = λv -There are 2 different kinds of waves: 1. longitudinal 2. transverse -electromagnetic waves are always transverse waves

Waves -atoms were seen to give off specific line emissions (specific wavelengths of light) -these emissions are unique for each element -electrons can behave like waves
