Example of A Safe System Think of some safe systems

You use a safe system every day. When you drive your car on a public road you are doing so as part of a safe system. Dataplate Training Example of A Safe System Driving

Safe People Car drivers are: - Competent – Trained Qualified – Tested & Certified Current – Drive frequently & informed of changes (e.g. Tyre depth, mobile law etc) Example of A Safe System Dataplate Training

Safe Place Roads are: - Fit for purpose Cleaned, planned with an organised layout Maintained Risk assessed Example of A Safe System Dataplate Training

Safe Practice Best practice put in place & standardised Risk assessed Covered by written procedure & instruction Procedure - Road Traffic Act / Road Safety Act Instruction – Highway Code Control Document – Signs & symbols Audited – Safety cameras & police Reviewed with changes in law etc Example of A Safe System Dataplate Training

Safe Equipment & Materials Cars and other road vehicles are: - Fit for purpose – Designed for use Serviceable & maintained – Tested for safety Certified - MOT Fuel & oils assessed and controlled Dataplate Training Example of A Safe System

Road traffic collisions used to be described as road traffic accidents but were renamed because the word accident implies it was no ones fault. All traffic collisions and incidents are caused by a break down of the safe system and more often than not it is the safe practise not being followed which is the cause. Dataplate Training Example of A Safe System

Do you adhere to the safe system? When was the last time you checked the road worthiness of your vehicle including tyre condition, fluid levels, lights, steering, horn? Safe System calls for everyday you use it. When was the last time you reported a pot hole you noticed? Safe system calls for improper road conditions to be reported to local council by the road user. What about speed, distance, indication, alertness, improper use of lights (flashing as a signal)? Driving Safe System Dataplate Training

Safe Systems Work Just because… You were born to do the job You were designed to do the job Your parents did the job Your grandparents did the job You do the job everyday You know the job inside-out The job is all you do… Dataplate Training

…without a safe system of work or if the safe system of work is not followed, its only a matter of time… Dataplate Training
