Physical Setting Mapping Terms Part 1

Map A drawing of all or part of the earth’s surface seen as if you were looking down from above.

Political Map Maps that show political features such as individual countries and cities.

Physical Map Maps that show physical features such as mountains or rivers (land and water forms) Dollar Lake, NS

Legend The part of the map that explains the symbols used on that map (a key) ex. Colour legend – uses colours to represent different things on a map

Symbols Used to represent information on a map – they can show physical or political features or things that are man made ex. Bridges, road, etc.

Hemisphere Literally, “half a sphere”.

The earth can be divided along the Equator into northern & southern hemispheres.

The earth can also be divided into eastern and western hemispheres along the Prime Meridian and International Date Line

Oceans Great bodies of salt water that cover approximately 70% of the earth’s surface. There are 4: Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Indian Ocean.

Continents The great land masses that cover the earth’s surface. North America, South America, Africa, Australia (Oceania), Antarctica, Europe, Asia (Eurasia)

Mapping Assignment

Please follow the instructions below. On the blank outline maps in the package provided, clearly and neatly label according to the instructions. Spelling, capitalization and neatness count! You may lightly shade the land masses green. Leave Antarctica white on the world map. The oceans can be lightly shaded in blue. Make sure you can easily read your labeling.
