AGENDA Welcome and Introductions Introduction to BPIECE tool Areas and Indicators How to score & what to do with those scores Questions? Answers! Discussions!

BPIECE HISTORY LESSON The BPIECE is the product of an extraordinary collaboration spearheaded by OEL,the Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies at UF and several others. BPIECE is primarily used for birth thru five. It is specific to Early Childhood.

What Is Inclusion In Your Center? Accessibility? Adaptations? IEP specifications/goals? Environment? Self contained?

Early Childhood Inclusion: A Definition Early childhood inclusion embodies the values, policies and practices that support the right of every infant and young child and his/her family, regardless of ability, to participate in a broad range of activities and contexts as full members of families, communities and society. The desired results of inclusive experiences for children with and without disabilities and their families include a sense of belonging and membership, positive social relationships and friendships, and development and learning to reach their full potential. The defining features of inclusion that can be used to identify high quality early childhood and services are: Access, Participation, and Supports.

What Is the BPIECE? A VOLUNTARY self-assessment tool designed for directors to reflect on their programs and how you promote inclusive activities It is used to identify areas of strength and areas for growth regarding inclusive practices. Best Practices in Inclusive Early Childhood Education-BPIECE!

BPIECE PROCESS Early learning directors self-rate using a checklist of 32 practice indicators in seven areas. Using the ratings, directors identify their strengths and opportunities for growth in supporting an inclusive classroom. BPIECE is a user-friendly tool from which action and professional development can be determined. Can be used along with other program assessment tools.

The BPIECE Areas & Indicators Administration – 8 Indicators Environment – 3 Indicators Family – 6 Indicators Collaboration and interaction – 5 Indicators Professional Development – 4 Indicators Screening and Assessment – 2 Indicators Transition – 4 Indicators

Rating of Indicators Always: I use this practice all the time Usually: I use this practice most of the time Occasionally: I use this practice some of the time, as I need it Not Yet: I have not used this practice and/or I don’t know what it is Examples are just that….examples not goals or expectations.

Should You Choose to Accept This Mission…. You will need to complete the survey monkey to let me know you want to participate. The link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/bpiecedirectors You will also receive the link in your follow up email after the webinar. You will need to complete the BPIECE by April 13th and the survey by April 27th. Once survey is complete we will provide you with a token of our appreciation.

Let’s Explore the BPIECE As we go thru some of the BPIECE, begin to self-assess yourself. This is not a pass or fail assessment. Be honest and don’t be discouraged. This tool cannot be used in any shape, form or fashion for staff review or evaluation. The totally awesome resource pages 20-26

In Conclusion…. Questions? Concerns? Answers! We will offer Technical Assistance while you are completing the assessment, if you need it. In thanks for reflecting on your practice and assisting with this pilot, once you have submitted your survey to OEL, ELCFV will stop by and give you a token of our appreciation.
