Presentation transcript:

Objective: You will learn how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions by renaming whole numbers as fractional parts.

You know that… Any whole number can be renamed as fraction. Example: Fractions with the same numerator and denominator are always equal to 1 whole.

You know that… Any whole number can be renamed as fraction. Example: Fractions with a 1 in the denominator represent a whole number given by its numerator.

You know that… Any whole number can be renamed as fraction. Example: Improper fractions with denominators that divide the numerator equally also represent whole numbers.

Convert a mixed number to an improper fraction by renaming the wholes as fractional parts. Ex: Strategy Rename the wholes as fractions. Add it to the fraction part of the mixed number Alternate Strategy Multiply the denominator by the whole number Add the result to the numerator The denominator stays the same

Solve an equivalent fractions problem involving improper fractions and mixed numbers. Problem: For a snack you sliced 2 apples each into 6 equal slices. You then ate 1 1/6 of the slices. Describe how much you ate? Strategy Rename the wholes as fractions Add it to the fraction part of the mixed number

Conclusion: In this lesson, you learned how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions by renaming whole numbers as fractional parts. Rename the wholes as fractions Add it to the fraction part of the mixed number Alternate Strategy Multiply the denominator by the whole number Add the result to the numerator The denominator stays the same
