Why be a Learning Assistant (LA)? Help teams with in- class work Become a mentor for students Work closely with faculty Enhance interpersonal skills Build your résumé Share your course experiences Gain insight about teaching and learning Grasp course material at a deeper level Stand out as a leader in the College of IST Put some money (or credits) in your pocket
Qualifications? Completion of course with a grade of A- or better GPA of 3.2 or higher Good communication (speaking and writing) Professionalism Demonstrated initiative
Two Options (Note: Neither case guarantees a position) Mutual Verbal Agreement General Pool Before the application is submitted, instructor and student discuss possible working relationship Student and instructor reach verbal agreement on the number of hours and the section of the course that the student should apply for Both agree to request each other, making this a “matched” application with a mutual verbal agreement When a student has not discussed with any instructors a possible placement in a particular course, student submits application to the general pool Qualified students will be asked to consult a Google jobs Spreadsheet to connect with faculty
Requirements for New LAs Orientation – Sunday immediately before classes start, usually 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. IST 389 (LA Prep Course) First half of semester for 75 min. (3:35 – 4:50PM) Credits 3 credits preparation class IST Support of Option SRA Support of Option 1 credit - course work, 2 credits - LA role
