Align Foundation Skills with unit content - example Performance Criteria Foundation Skills Sample Activities 1.1 Identify personal learning goals for work Oral Communication - Discuss ideas for future Reading - to obtain relevant information Planning and Organising - record of notes, thoughts etc. for future reference Talk with tutor and other people to clarify goals / ideas Document very simply goals / ideas relating to personal future Keep record of thoughts for future reference throughout the course 3.2 Seek feedback from appropriate person Oral Communication - Discuss ideas, question and analyse feedback Planning and Organising – record main points of discussion for completion of learning plan. Discuss open-mindedly being prepared to negotiate and change Ask questions and listen to responses Consider different perspectives Make notes of key points Include key concepts into documented learning plan © Community Centres SA 2016

Embedding Foundation Skills in ACE Course Activities Role of the Tutor The Tutor must: Thoughtfully plan activities that align with the unit’s content and know which Foundation Skills are utilised to undertake that activity Identify what successful use of the Foundation Skill looks like, so that competent use of any Foundation Skill is recognised Refer to the ACSF to ascertain how to develop the core skills to a higher level of complexity where relevant for learners to maximise learning outcomes © Community Centres SA 2016

Features of Competency - descriptors Foundation Skill Features of Competency - descriptors Reading - Locates and reads information to support own work-related learning Highlights / underlines key points from text Identifies relevant information in written and / or verbal texts Reads with fluency and comprehension Can explain located information in own words Can navigate texts to locate relevant information – uses an index, table of contents etc. Oral Communication - Discusses progress with trainer or supervisor Asks relevant questions Listens to and considers other points of view Responds to critique using conventional courtesy Uses appropriate non-verbal communication techniques Demonstrates appropriate register for conversation Communicates using reasonable grammatical accuracy Recognises the difference between colloquial and formal vocabulary and uses appropriately Planning and Organising - Develops and following a personal learning plan Maintains simple record of relevant information for learning purposes Makes informed decisions re goals etc. after consideration and discussion with relevant person – tutor etc. Demonstrates linkages from one session to the next Decides upon format and documentation of learning plan © Community Centres SA 2016

Embedding Foundation Skills in ACE Course Activities What does competency look like? The Tutor has the opportunity to decide upon which features / descriptors of competency he / she is seeking within each ACE course. The decision may be influenced by: The learning outcomes which have been decided for the course The level of the ACSF Core Skills The capability of each learner individually –assessment relates to individual learners and is not a collective, group outcome decision © Community Centres SA 2016
