What We Are Working on Now and Why It’s Important Student writing sample This is what a student wrote in my class last week during a writing assignment where they applied what they learned in class to a story. We are working towards being great story writers this year because… Writing stories helps kids learn the content I teach by doing it. We learned about similes so students wrote similes in their story. I want to teach students that words are powerful and can change the lives of people. A story can change a person’s life. I want students to be the creators of stories and not have stories be fed to them which is what happens when they watch Netflix. They need to see the connection between stories they write and the fact that they write their own life story every day. People like people who can tell a good story. They can make money in this town by being a good story writer.

Homework Every month students are to read a different school appropriate book that is at least 100 pages that is interesting to them. It can be fiction (of the author’s imagination) or non-fiction (real facts). Each week they are to write a 10 sentence summary about what they read that week. This will be due every Thursday/Friday until the end of the school year. They should be able to bring this book to school so that they can read it when they are done with a class assignment. I don’t plan on giving much homework other than this because this act alone is so important . It will help them to raise their reading level by at least 1 grade level by the end of the school year. I want them to gain the habit of reading for pleasure at home. This is something life-long learners do. If you ask them, “Do you have homework for Ms. Capillo?” The response should be, “Yes. I need to read my book and write my summary for the week.” They should be reading for at least 30 minutes each day to help them raise their reading level.

Multiple Intelligence Theory and How That Is Applied To This Class Interpersonal- learns with people best Intrapersonal- learns through reflection Linguistic- learns through writing or words Logical-Mathematical-learns best when content is presented logically Kinesthetic- learns best when movement is involved or the student gets to learn through doing Musical- learns when song or music is involved Spatial-learns through seeing Naturalistic- learns when nature is involved

What happens when my student is absent What happens when my student is absent? What if my student needs more time on an assignment?

Would you be willing to come in and talk about your career to students Would you be willing to come in and talk about your career to students? Volunteers? Having kids solve real-world problems is something that motivates students to learn. How do you solve real-world problems in your profession? Would you be willing to share this information with students?
