FIRE EMERGENCY AWARENESS TRAINING AND FIRE EXINGUISHER USE

WHAT TO DO DURING FIRE Be calm Raise alarm Notify necessary authority of the situation Attack the fire at that infant stage if trained If the fire develops into an inferno, evacuate the location immediately. Never go back in to pick anything after you have evacuated.

WHAT IS FIRE Fire is a rapid chemical reaction that takes place in the presence of fuel, oxygen and ignition source and has heat, smoke and flame as output. This combination that results to fire occurs between 3 major components: Fuel Oxygen Ignition source

CLASSES OF FIRE Class A fires: This type of fire involves flammable solids like wood, paper, plastics, cloths, etc. Class B fires: This type of fire involves flammable liquids like kerosene, petrol, paint etc. Class C fire: Flammable gases like hydrogen, butane, methane, etc. Class D fire: These are fire caused by metals like magnesium, aluminum, potassium, etc. Class E fire: Electrical fire; fire caused by electrical equipment Class F fire: Fire caused by cooking oil.

DEFINITION OF THE COMPONENT OF FIRE FUEL: Fuel in the context of fire is anything that can burn. It includes paper, wood, cloth, plastic, dry leaves, kerosene, petrol, gas, oil, paint, etc. IGNITION SOURCE: Ignition source is anything that can start fire. It could be heat, naked flame, sparks, etc. OXYGEN: The air that is everywhere contains oxygen which supports fire.

THE FIRE TRIANGLE

The combination of the 3 component that causes fire makes up the fire triangle. Without this 3 component in place, there can never be fire. Taking out any of these component from an already existing fire will terminate the fire. The concept of fire breakout or fire extinguishing is covered in the fire triangle. This is why understanding the fire triangle is very important.

3 WAYS OF EXTINQUISHING FIRE COOLING: This involve reducing the heat of the fire. SMOTHERING: This involves cutting of oxygen supply to the fire. This could be achieved by covering the fire with fire blanket or anything that could block oxygen supply to the fire. STARVATION: This form of extinguishing method works by starving the fire of fuel. As far as the fire is denied of fuel to burn, it can only burn to the level of fuel available to it, then stop.

THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER

TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND THE CLASSES OF FIRE THEY EXTINGUISH Fire extinguisher is a device use to extinguish fire when it is still at the infant stage. There are different types of fire extinguisher based on the type of fire they extinguish Types extinguisher Class of fire they extinguish Colour Code Water Extinguisher Class A fire Bright Red Foam Extinguisher Class A & B fire Cream Dry Powder Class A, B & C fire Blue CO2 Extinguisher Class E & B Black Wet Chemical Class F fire NIL

HOW TO USE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER To use your fire extinguisher appropriately never forget your P.A.S.S P – Pull: Pull the lock pin A – Aim: Aim at the base of the fire S – Squeeze: Squeeze the handle S – sweep: Sweep: Sweep from left to right Watch how to use the fire extinguisher video

COMPONENT OF THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Keep your fire extinguisher operational Ensure that the pressure gauge is always on the green If the inspection tag has expired, notify the HSE personnel for inspection and certification.

What you should not do with the fire extinguisher when it is not in use Never pull out the lock pin Do not relocate from the install point Never place anything which could block or obstruct assess to the fire extinguisher. Never use an install fire extinguisher to experiment on when it you are not undergoing any formal training. Fire extinguisher can only be used once.
