Algebraic Equations Solving One Step Equations with Whole Numbers Addition and Subtraction

The Meaning of Inverse Inverse means “opposite” In order to solve equations we do the inverse of the operation being used in the equation. Example: x + 7 = 10 -7 -7 x = 3 *The inverse or opposite of addition is subtraction, so we subtract 7 from both sides of the equal sign to determine what the value of x is.

Inverses Lets remember what the inverse of each of the operations are. What is the inverse of…….. Addition? Subtraction? Multiplication? Division?

Steps to Solving an Equation How would we solve this problem? v – 13 = 16 Step 1: See what operation is being used Step 2: What is the inverse or opposite operation? Step 3: Use the inverse operation on each side of the equal sign to determine the value of the variable.

Solving the Equation v – 13 = 16 + 13 +13 v = 29 1.) The operation being used is (Subtraction) 2.) The inverse of subtraction is addition 3.) I will add 13 to both sides of the equal sign to determine the value of v. + 13 +13 v = 29

Exceptions What is we have an equation that looks like this? To solve a subtraction problem where the variable is in between the two constants we use the first constant, take the subtraction sign and the second constant and subtract. So we would take 16 – 7 to get the value for x. Therefore, x = 9

Lets try another exception… 14 – k = 3 The variable is in the middle so we will take the first constant and subtract it from the second constant to get the value for k. 14 – 3 = k k = 11
