Lesson 8 Vocabulary

1. scullery- a small room next to the kitchen Even though we have a scullery in our kitchen, we do not use it often. 2. ensconced- to place or settle comfortably, snugly Santa Claus was ensconced in the armchair waiting for the first child to arrive.

3. paddock-a small enclosed field where horses are kept The family kept the horses in a paddock on the farm. 4. abolished- to do away with completely; to put an end to The dress code was reinstated after being abolished two years before.

5. resolution- having a fixed firm purpose, determined Mary made a resolution to do all of her homework and study more. 6. apathy- lack of emotion or interest Prosecutors were concerned by his lack of apathy in committing the murder.

7. ignominious- shameful; dishonorable Because he divorced his wife and later married her sister, Mark has an ignominious reputation among the townspeople. 8. vengeance- revenge (with great force) When Todd did not get the justice he thought he deserved in court, he got his vengeance by shooting his attacker.

9. irrepressible- impossible to restrain or control Jason could not control his irrepressible anger. 10. maxim- a concisely expressed principal or rule of conduct Treating others how I want to be treated is a variation of a maxim I learned as a child.

11. cryptic- having a hidden or unclear meaning The teacher’s scribbles on the edges of my research paper were cryptic and hard to read. (Ms. Cook ) 12. parasitical-living at the expense of others Freshwater leeches are parasitical in nature, feeding off the blood of fish.

13. acute- severe, sharp Jake was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. 14. blithely- showing a cheerful disposition; carefree They blithely carried on chatting, ignoring the customers who were waiting to be served.

15. faction- a group of persons acting together for a common goal. When the country’s ruling faction started killing off its political rivals, people started to protest outside the capitol building. 16. pretext- a false reason; an excuse Amy’s pretext for being late to work involves a sick child he does not have.

17. articulate- expressing oneself easily and clearly The baby is beginning to form articulate words and phrases. 18. restive- restless; uneasy; hard to manage By 2:55, all of the students had become restive.

19. vivacious-full of life; spirited The outgoing, vivacious girl became a famous actress. 20. frothing-white bubbles, foam The sick animal was frothing at the mouth.
