PHRASES vs. CLAUSES What is a PHRASE? Two or more words with a subject OR a verb the funny, energetic teacher (Noun phrase) has been trying (Verb phrase) to make sushi (Infinitive phrase) at school (Prepositional phrase) What is a CLAUSE? Two or more words with a subject AND a verb the funny, energetic teacher is late to class PHRASES vs. CLAUSES

PARTS OF A COMPLETE SENTENCE SENTENCES A sentence is a sequence of words which begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (or ! Or ?) It has a subject It has a verb It has a COMPLETE IDEA The funny, energetic, English teacher has been trying to make sushi at school. PARTS OF A COMPLETE SENTENCE

TYPES OF CLAUSES DEPENDENT Clause that the students enjoyed the grammar lesson Begins with that or If, and Wh- words. Subject + Verb (not the main verb) NOT a complete idea. Cannot stand alone (DEPENDENT) DEPENDENT of an independent clause. INDEPENDENT Clause The students enjoyed the grammar lesson. Called the MAIN CLAUSE. Subject + Verb Complete idea. Stands alone (INDEPENDENT) TYPES OF CLAUSES

One INDEPENDENT clause that contains a subject and a verb, and expresses a complete thought. Ruaa likes pizza. Some students like to study in the mornings. Le and Dat play soccer every afternoon. Ha goes to the library and studies everyday. #1 SIMPLE SENTENCE

Two INDEPENDENT clauses combined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction ( 7 FANBOYS) A coordinating conjunction is a word that connects parts of a sentence. ChengHao likes pizza, but he doesn’t like tacos. Peng drives to school, and Vi rides with him. , , #2 COMPOUND SENTENCE

#3 COMPLEX SENTENCE INDEPENDENT + DEPENDENT - Dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction which is less important to the main idea clause. Xueyun did her homework while she watched a movie. Since Dat passed his English exam, Hai has been very happy. #3 COMPLEX SENTENCE

#4 COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE INDEPENDENT + + CC+ INDEPENDENT + SC + DEPENDENT clause. Vy went to the store, and she bought some groceries while Diem was sleeping. While Diem was sleeping Vy went to the store, and she bought some groceries. Because I paid attention I got an A on the test, and I was so happy. I got an A on the test and I was so happy because I paid attention. #4 COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE
