Why is government important??? Philosopher Thomas Hobbes said we are all greedy and selfish. Without government and laws, people would run wild over society. The purpose of government is to maintain order and prevent social chaos.

Confederation A form of government in which power flows from the local governments to the central government. The local governments have ultimate power. Membership is voluntary in a confederation. Members of a confederation are often trying to achieve a common goal. Federal A form of government in which power is divided between one central and several regional authorities - power is shared between various levels of government

Examples of this form of government include dictatorships and absolute monarchies. Oligarchic A form of government in which a small group has the power. The citizens do not participate in government. Democratic A form of government in which the people have the power. Citizens participate in government by electing governmental leaders.

What are the forms of a democratic government???? Presidential A democratic form of government in which the executive and legislative branches are separate. The head of government (chief executive) is only in the executive branch. Parliamentary A democratic form of government in which the executive and legislative branches are linked. The head of government (chief executive) is selected within the legislative branch and also makes up the executive branch.
