Real-Time Data Acquisition Streaming and Control Interface for ePHASORsim Kellen Oleksak, Kevin Tomsovic, Hantao Cui The University of Tennessee, Knoxville OPAL-RT API Interface for ePHASORsim Simulating the Grid Why Real-Time Simulators? The OPAL-RT automated processing interface allows for the development of real-time data acquisition and streaming applications from a physically connected target system. It can be further expanded to measurement units and control devices to simulate a scaled, cyber-physical system with varying objectives. Most notably, dynamic stability analysis for large scale grid modeling. Physical system testing is not possible on large scale. Renewable energy additions Hardware in the loop can only occur in real-time No cost of operation loss. Lab testing confirms system upgrades and cost benefits Interactivity and control operations training Reusable system models with modifiable scenarios and data initialization Physical device and network connectivity Data Acquisition and Streaming Hierarchy Device parameters for chosen scenario are sent to dynamic software and server System model loaded in ePHASORsim software with I/O for state and discrete variables to stream to Large Scale Test Bed modules Local simulation host arbitrates device names, indices, variables and data to server to initialize system parameters for requesting LTB modules Power system model executes on real-time target generating device response data Local simulation interface continually streams model data to modules according to module parameter requests Automated and user defined control inputs allow for interactivity to effect simulation in real-time, concurrently allowing modules to respond to changes in device states such as active generators, bus faults, line faults and breaker switching. Dynamic stability analysis tools and visualization provides model insight from small scale dynamics to wide-area connectedness Power System Model Data Initialization Model Loaded in ePHASORsim Data Generation Local Simulation Software Interface OPAL-RT Interface I/O Mapping Large Scale Test Bed Streaming Service Clients Disturbance effect on bus phase angle and voltage from HVDC line fault (prototype) State Estimation Computation Tools Visualization Control Fault Control Input Parameters Bus/Line Number Status (Active/Inactive) Fault Start Time Fault Duration Control Input Event and Response Modules on the LTB server initialize event activation time and duration to the local simulator Local simulator sets control change inputs to Simulink block diagrams and/or S-Function blocks Control input supports bus/line faults, generator status, line switching and breaker status Simulator allows for real-time control input changes to operator actions for scenario testing Closed loop results in direct state estimation and visualization to connected modules Fault Period Activate Set Fault Start Control Input Update Model Deactivate Set Fault End Control Input Update Model Bus/Line Effects At Event Time Reset Bus/Line Status Simulation Response Bus/Line Parameters Variation System Stability Analysis Security Operations Operator Responses Simulink Fault Block Diagram
