Supporting police officers and staff to achieve an academic qualification (Version 3.0 July 2018) What is RPL? The Recognition of Prior Experience and Learning (RPL) is a process that allows police officers and staff the opportunity to access academic credits for their experience and the courses they have completed during their service. Credits will be dependent on individual course history and experience. The response to a College-led public consultation highlighted that: 23 out of 26 policing organisations felt that accreditation was a positive way of acknowledging the skills and abilities of serving officers and staff. 74% of officers, staff and special constables reported that they would be interested in gaining externally recognised accreditation. How is an academic qualification going to help? It could provide you with an externally recognised qualification that has meaning, credibility and transferability within and beyond policing. It can help develop new ways of thinking and learning, plus new skills which may provide opportunities for career development. You have the opportunity to research a specific specialism of interest to you and add your research to the evidence-base for policing. What has been developed? The College has worked with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) to produce a standardised framework for awarding typical academic credits to previous learning and experience. A Credit Estimator (this can only be accessed by being a College Member) has been created as part of the Professional Development Platform which gives an idea of how many credits an individual might be able to claim, and a Directory allows them to see what academic courses they might be able to use them against. What do I need to do? As a manager, you can start to prepare officers and police staff by thinking how they might be able to use this process to develop themselves, fill any knowledge gaps or work towards priority areas in your force. In-force support may be available. As an individual you might want to think about areas of study that may help with your career plans, or help develop the specialism you work in. …..available right now! The Professional Development Platform holds further information along with Q & A’s; visit by using any internet enabled device (including mobile): https://profdev.college.police.uk/ Updates will be provided via various methods of communication. If you have any specific questions around RPL or Policing Education Qualification Framework (PEQF) transition contact: RPL@college.pnn.police.uk The Academic Support Network on POLKA provides developmental peer support for those studying for academic qualifications.
