Work Smart

Is our vessel ready on site Or has there been a delay

We must have a controlled environment before any work can commence on our method statement

Our housing has to be to a good standard

At least protection from wind and rain

Our dehumidifier is in place And we have clean and dry air

We now have environmental control

Our first inspection inside the vessel is to identify any sharp edges that need grinding or radiussing And mark them up

We then need to get them to the required standard

Have we achieved a 75 micron profile which is the minimum standard for the Belzona coating

We have achieved our 75 microns but we have a problem the most common problem that occurs after the blasting is water coming out of a porous weld after the hydrostatic pressure test What do we do ?

Have we done a dust check and have we achieved the method statements requirement If not achieved re- vacuum and check again

Have we done a salt check and have we achieved the method statements requirement If we have not achieved wash the surface and re-blast

We are now ready to apply the coating OK Or are we

Have we taken and recorded the batch numbers

Have we masked up all stripe coated areas

If we are mixing small amounts does everybody know and understand the mixing ratio

And are we using accurate weighing equipment

Are we taking and recording WFT readings

After the application of the stripe coat we must remove the masking tape right away

Are we doing any flange face forming Or are we just hand applying onto the face

Or are we terminating the Belzona coating inside the nozzle

Wash away any amine bloom on the surface with a warm detergent wash

Do we have some covers to coat and do we know where they are Does the client require test panels

FROST BLAST SWEEP BLAST FLASH BLAST BRUSH BLAST 4 common terms used to describe a lightly grit blasted surface on the Belzona coating

A lot of people do not understand what is required when we say a frost blast FROST BLAST

The aim of the frost blast is to remove the surface gloss (shine/sheen) from the cured Belzona coating system to a frosted appearance (the same way that glass would have an etched / whitish frosted appearance if sand blasted) with a surface profile of around 25 microns. For the purpose of this frost blasting we recommend using a finer grit. The method we would use would be:- 1. Blast nozzle pressure 50 to 80 psi 2. Abrasive grade 60/30 3. Recommended Abrasive type - Garnet 4. Distance of nozzle from surface mm 5. Nozzle type – 8 to 12mm diameter venturi type 6. Blasting angle to surface - 45 degrees The aim of this blasting procedure is also intended to remove any contaminants from the surface. It is not to produce a profile similar to that required on bare steel. The frost blasting of the relatively soft Belzona material will automatically produce a fine profile, giving the clean surface a satin or frosted appearance. With inexperienced operators, a test section should be evaluated before and after blasting.

A comparator can be used to determine a acceptable frost blast

These are examples of a bad frost blast

And these are examples of a good frost blast
