Transition Metal Ions and Tin and Lead Ions (mostly about naming them)

Write the electron configuration for zinc (Zn): 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 How many valence e–’s in zinc (Zn)? 2 What charge will an Zn ion have? Zn2+ 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 nucleus

Sn F Sn S SnS2 SnF2 2+ – 4+ 2– tin(IV) sulfide tin(II) fluoride is used in glazes for porcelain fixtures. tin(II) fluoride is added to toothpastes to prevent cavities. SnS2 SnF2 Tin(II) fluoride and tin(IV) sulfide have different compositions and uses. a) Tin(II) fluoride is added to toothpastes to prevent cavities. b) Tin(IV) sulfide is used in glazes for porcelain fixtures and dishes. Inferring What are the charges on the tin ions in the two compounds? Transition metals (…also Pb and Sn) use a Roman numeral in ( ) to dictate the charge, which will be positive. This is it’s charge regardless of where it lands on the Periodic Table.

Small note is that if Zinc or Silver is without a Roman Numeral (will almost always be) the oxidation states, of the ions, will be: Zn+2 Ag+1 ZnO is Zinc Oxide Ag2S is Silver Sulfide - The above ARE valid formula names.

Quick Quiz! 1. When metals from groups 1A, 2A, and 3A form cations, the charge on the ion is equal to… 8 minus the group number. the group number minus 8. the period number. the group number.

Quick Quiz. 2. What is the correct name for this ion? Cu2+ copper ion copper II ion copper(II) ion copper(2+) ion

Quick Quiz. 3. What is the correct symbol for the lead(IV) ion? Pb5– Pb4– Pb5+ Pb4+

Quick Quiz. 4. What is the formula for iron(II) iodide? Fe2I FeI2 Fe2I2 FeI

Quick Quiz. 5. The correct name for CrCl3 is ________. chromium chloride. chromium(I) chloride. chromium trichloride. chromium(III) chloride.
