Current UK and EACTS database initiatives

Mission statement of the EACTS Database (http://www. eacts ‘To work with other organisations towards a global culture of data collection to create a European wide repository of information on the practice of cardio-thoracic surgery as a tool for quality improvement and to disseminate that information in such a way that it is easily accessible and understandable to our patients and the public’

EACTS projects Overview Specific projects There are a number of EACTS database initiatives and other projects informally or loosely related to EACTS. Some are relatively mature, others less so Specific projects The Congenital Database is well summarised at http://www.eactscongenitaldb.org/index.php?LANG=en&level=1&struct=1) The adult cardiac surgery register does not have a web presence but through Dendrite Clinical Systems Ltd, EACTS published a comprehensive report in 2010 ‘Towards Global Benchmarking’ (http://www.e-dendrite.com/publishing/reports/Cardiothoracic-Surgery/44) Country specific benchmarking reports

EACTS projects Some of the European database initiatives have come from autonomous groups and have varying association with EACTS. They are summarised on specific websites The European mitral valve repair register of the European valve repair group (http://www.evrg.org/) The International Surgical AF Register (http://demo.e-dendrite.com/csp/atrialfib/FrontPages/iafrfront.csp) The EUROMACS Registry is a web-based registry that will collect procedural and outcomes data for patients receiving mechanical circulatory support (http://euromacs.org/).

Current EACTS database initiatives Agreeing a minimum dataset Developing strategy for risk adjustment methodologies Producing quality improvement tools for members Discussions with STS re harmonisation Academic developments Updated report 2013

UK database - process Multiple stakeholders SCTS – defining datasets, leading the database Department of Health – funding HQIP – Contract management Hospitals – data collection Central cardiac audit database (NICOR, UCL) – secure data transmission and collation University of Manchester – data processing, analysis, research and development Dendrite clinical systems Ltd – data management, analysis and publication
