Functions of the Nervous System Chapter 9 Functions of the Nervous System

Nervous System Allows us to feel, think, remember, and move Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves Composed of Neurons: nerve cells, that are specialized to react to physical & chemical changes in their surroundings

Neuron Components Cell Body- the rounded area that contains 2 different types of extensions 1. dendrites- numerous branches; receive the electromechanical messages. 2. Axons- extensions that send information; usually 1 axon. Myelin sheath- covers axons; formed by Schwann Cells

Nervous Tissue made up of: Neurons: nerve cells Neuroglial cells: helper cells “glia” = glue Support and bind components of nervous tissue to each other and to blood vessels Function similarly to connective tissue in other organ systems

Nervous System Organs in the Nervous System can be divided into 2 groups: 1. Central Nervous System (CNS): consists of the brain & spinal cord 2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Connects the CNS to other body parts.

Functions 3 general functions 1. sensory 2. integrative 3. motor

Sensory Sensory receptors detect changes inside and outside the body External environmental factors: light and sound Internal environmental factors: body temperature and oxygen concentration

Integrative Interneurons transfer and interpret results

Motor Send appropriate impulses/messages to the muscles and glands for movement.
