Cells and Life functions Life Science Cells and Life functions

Cell Theory 1. The cell is the basic unit of structure and function of all living things. 2. Cell must do all the life functions. 3. Cells only come from other cells.

Life Functions Every living organism needs to perform certain functions to stay alive. Each body system is responsible for completing one or more life function. Which life function does each system do?

Circulatory System TRANSPORTATION! Whenever something needs to go somewhere in the body the blood will take it there. Blood delivers nutrients and also carries waste away from the cells.

Digestive System NUTRITION! This system ingests food and digests it so the nutrients can be absorbed into the blood and delivered to the cells.

Respiratory System RESPIRATION! NOT BREATHING! Making energy from nutrients Oxygen + glucose  ENERGY + carbon dioxide+ water O2 + C6H12O6  ATP + CO2 + H2O

Urinary System EXCRETION! The body must get rid of waste or it will become toxic Other systems that eliminate waste are respiratory, digestive system and skin.

Nervous and Endocrine Systems REGULATION! Someone needs to control and coordinate all the activities in the body. Nerves send messages via neurons (fast) Hormones are chemical messengers (slower)

Reproductive System REPRODUCTION! Making more like you! Not essential for the individual, critical for the species

Skeletal and Muscular Systems MOVEMENT! NOT a life function – why? Not every living thing has to move to be alive Ex: plants

1. What is the major function of the human excretory system? (1) eliminate waste materials (2) respond to stimuli (3) break down food mechanically (4) absorb nutrients from food

2. The interaction of the skeletal and muscular systems to produce locomotion is coordinated by which human body system? (1) circulatory (2) nervous (3) excretory (4) respiratory

3. Which human body system produces the hormones that regulate growth? (1) skeletal (2) circulatory (3) digestive (4) endocrine

4.The diagram below shows a cell. This cell would be found in which type of organism? (1) animals (3) viruses (2) fungi (4) plants

5. The table below provides some information about common plant cell structures and their functions. Fill in the three blank spaces by writing the name of the plant cell structure that performs the function described. Nucleus Chloroplasts Cell Wall

6. Select three of the structures labeled in the diagram key. List these structures in the table below. For each structure selected, state its function in the cell.

7. Which of the organisms shown below consists of only one cell? (1) pine tree (3) mushroom (2) ameba (4) earthworm

8. Which process is responsible for the growth and repair of human tissue? (1) evolution (3) cell division (2) germination (4) natural selection

9. Nutrients enter the bloodstream during the process of? (1) locomotion (3) elimination (2) respiration (4) absorption
