Research Methods in HFA4UC This will help you over the course of the semester.

Social Scientific Inquiry Model Step One: Develop a Research Question Step Two: Form a Hypothesis Step Three: Collect Data Step Four: Analyze Data Step Five: Communicate your conclusions

Questions Choose an issue related to food safety. Write a research question that relates to the issue you choose. Sample research question: On which type of cooking board will there be fewer bacteria after washing? 3. Write a hypothesis that may answer the research question. Sample hypothesis: Plastic cutting boards will have fewer bacteria than wood or glass cutting boards after washing. 4. What could you do to investigate whether your hypothesis was correct?

Exploring Examples of topics in this course: Nutritional needs through the lifespan, nutritional status of different groups, etc. Your first Exploring Topic: Food Bourne Illness Identifying key concepts: Learn about topics through discussion, brainstorming, use of visual organizers (charts, etc) Formulate effective questions to guide your research and inquiry For example: If you were researching the risks and benefits of drinking protein shakes, why might it be important to compare the effects on athletes and non-athletes? Create a T-chart for each athlete. *Bonus? Potential for +4 on first unit test

Investigating Create appropriate research plans to investigate selected topics Outline purpose and method Identify sources of info Develop research tools such as surveys or questionnaires Locate and select info relevant to your investigations from a variety of Primary Sources Interviews, surveys, observations, field research, data sets from Statistics Canada Secondary Sources Research Reports, Textbooks, Advertisements, brochures, newspaper and magazine articles, websites
