Chosen for a Living Hope and a Sure Salvation 1 Peter 1:1-12

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,

, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,

9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. 10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

Verses 1-2 You are chosen. By whom. By God through foreknowledge. How Verses 1-2 You are chosen! By whom? By God through foreknowledge. How? Through sanctification of the Spirit. For what? To obey Jesus and to be cleansed. The results… Grace, Peace and to be an Alien. Focus on God’s election, not man’s rejection!

Verses 3-9 A Living Hope Be an Alien, when things get tough, love others. 1 Peter 1:22 1 Peter 2:11-12 1 Peter 2:21-23 1 Peter 3:9-11 1 Peter 4:8

Verses 3-9 A Living Hope What is Living Hope Verses 3-9 A Living Hope What is Living Hope? A full assurance, strong confidence that God is for us, not against us. How do we get it? Through the Spirit and the Word. Hebrews 4:12 Living Hope empowers Holy Love, it calls you to imitate Jesus, it gives assurance of God’s blessing and care.

Verses 3-9 A Living Hope The basic reason we disobey God’s commands and leading is because we don’t have confidence that obeying will bring more blessing than disobeying. Mark 10:29-30 Spend time with God and in His Word to receive Living Hope, leading to Holy Love, so that you will be a blessing even in trials and have full confidence in Him leading to joy and peace that passes all understanding

Verses 10-12 The Greatness of our Salvation Do you know you need to be saved? People can feel safe but not BE saved and people can BE saved but not feel safe… Feelings are great servants but poor masters. How you FEEL is not as important as what is TRUE. Truth: WE NEED JESUS.

Verses 10-12 The Greatness of our Salvation Romans 3:23 1 Peter 3:18 1 Peter 4:17 1 Peter 5:8 1 Peter 2:25 1 Peter 5:4, 10 1 Peter 4:13

Verses 10-12 The Greatness of our Salvation Even the angels are excited about salvation. If you don’t have it, receive it from Jesus! If you do have it, rejoice and be glad! You have been chosen for a living hope and a sure salvation.

Lord my heart believes you were raised from the dead and that your death paid for all my sins past, present and future. I know and proclaim that God is for me and not against me. You are alive today and with me to help me forever. Help me now to have a living hope in your promises so that I will be freed from greed and self pity that comes from fear. Help me to imitate your love and that I would know that it is more blessed to obey than to disobey. Lord grant me in these times of stress and anxiety to have your living hope so that joy would fill my life with works of love. In Jesus name, Amen.
