LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) LSD is a hallucinogen and is among one of the most potent drugs available. It is an organic drug that was discovered in 1938 and is made from lysergic acid, which is found in ergot, a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. Some common slang names include, acid, blue heaven, yellow sunshine, cubes, blotter and window pane. There is currently no medical use for LSD. The drug is an illegal designer drug in the United States and is produced in clandestine laboratories in the U.S.

Short Term Effects Short: If taken in a large enough dose the user can experience hallucinations, the user’s sense of themselves and sense of time is altered. The person can hear colors and start seeing sounds. Some users can experience terrifying thoughts and feelings, fear of losing control, and even death while using LSD.

Long Term Effects Long: Flashbacks can occur a day or up to a year after using the drug. Overdosing on LSD may cause users to have more serious “trips”, psychosis and in rare cases possible death. Other long term effects can include anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

Impact on Community The people that buy LSD from dealers, are propping up the illicit drug market and creating further problems for their neighborhoods and communities. People who spend most of their time taking LSD or finding more LSD, support a chain reaction of problems. They’re unable to work reliably or take care of their family responsibilities, and are at risk of getting arrested or having other legal troubles. These issues affect their family and their community, leading to lost wages, emotional issues and general instability.

Unique Info In 2007 and 2008, 8th graders, 10th graders and 12th graders took a survey on LSD. It showed the perceived risk of harm from taking LSD, regularly decreased among 12th-graders (from 67.3 percent in 2007 to 63.6 percent in 2008).
