Customer-Responsive Strategic Planning Knowing Context of THIS Organization Should Drive Process
How to Start: Initial Customer Assessment What’s driving their need for strategic planning now? What ‘problem’ are they trying to solve? What have they had in place as strategy & strategic plan? What language or model have they used? Has that worked for them? What process or model do they have in mind? What are their expectations for the result? How will it be used? What’s the tension for strategic, fundamental change? What vital few questions must be answered unambiguously by end of this process?
Strategy vs. Strategic Plan Strategy: an integrated set of choices that together provide focus, coherence, and direction for the organization as a whole. (Heifetz, Linsky, Broesamle) Not necessarily complex calculation, but change in a mindset, a break with conventional wisdom, shift in point of view Balcony-view May be ‘equated’ with vision
Adaptive Leadership: Heifetz & Linsky “Practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough problems & thrive.” Tool kit of ways to lead through difficult change. Adaptive Challenge: “A state in which existing competencies and skills simply do not match requirements of the situation…… in which real change, often in form of learning & letting go of old competencies & relationships, must take place.”
Technical vs. Adaptive Challenges
