Symbiotic Relationships
Symbiotic Relationships Species interactions. What is symbiosis? Long term partnership between members of different species.
Symbiotic Relationships
* Competition- when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use the same ecological resource Males competing for the ability to mate.
How Do We Relate?. Relationships Many organisms have developed a close relationship with other organisms of different species. These close relationships.
Symbiosis. Our goal for today is to answer these questions: What is symbiosis? What are the different kinds of symbiosis? What are some examples of symbiosis?
Community Interactions. Community interactions, such as competition, predation, and various forms of symbiosis, can powerfully affect an ecosystem.

Presentation transcript:

Ecological Relationships Standard II: Objective 2: Generalize the dependent relationships between organisms. a. Categorize the relationships between organisms (i.e., producer/consumer/decomposer, predator/prey, mutualism/parasitism) and provide examples of each.

Symbiosis: Organisms living together

Is this Symbiosis? The pilot fish follow sharks for leftovers. YES!

Is this Symbiosis? Mosquito sucking blood YES!

Is this Symbiosis? Bees pollinating a flower. YES!

NO! Is this Symbiosis? The lynx tries to catch a rabbit dinner. Symbiosis is organisms living together. You can’t do that if one is dead! NO!

Mutualism A symbiotic relationship where both species BENEFIT Ants and Aphids: Ants protect the aphids and milk them for honeydew

Mutualism Clownfish clean the Anemone. In return, they are protected.

Commensalism A symbiotic relationship between organisms in which one is neither harmed nor benefitted. This pseudoscorpion hitches a ride on this fly.

Parasitism A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is HARMED.

Parasitism Human tape-worm is a quick way to lose weight- They grow over 20 feet long. Maybe there’s something more important than weight to worry about, eh?

What type of Symbiosis is this? (Mutualism, Commensalism, Parasitism) Birds eat bugs rustled up by the cows as the cows walk through the grass. Commensalism

What type of Symbiosis is this? (Mutualism, Commensalism, Parasitism) Leeches suck blood from other animals. Parasitism

What type of Symbiosis is this? (Mutualism, Commensalism, Parasitism) Leopard seal eating a penguin Not Symbiosis!! This is a predator/prey relationship

What type of Symbiosis is this? (Mutualism, Commensalism, Parasitism) Turtles get cleaned by the fish. The fish get a meal. Mutualism

Review- tell your desk partner what the following terms mean: Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism
