Symbiotic Relationships
Chapter 3 Energy and Matter in Ecosystems. adaptation – an inherited trait or characteristic that helps an organism survive.
SYMBIOSIS: relationships in nature. Definition of Adaptation Characteristics that allow an animal to survive in its environment. These characteristics.
Community Interactions Community: Many species interacting in the same environment Three types of interactions: – Competition – Predation – Symbiosis.
Symbiotic Relationships. What is symbiosis? What it means: Two organisms that live together Temporarily or for a longer time At least one of the organisms.
Interactions Between Species. Engage Symbiotic Circle.
14.2 Community Interactions OBJECTIVES Students will learn that competition and predation are two important ways that organisms interact AND that symbiosis.
How Many Species Do You Interact With Everyday?
Which best represents the relationship among levels of organization in Ecology? community population biosphere organism ecosystem organism population Community.
LIVING RELATIONSHIPS SYMBIOSIS Other Nutritional Relationships: SYMBIOSIS - Any close relationship between two organisms of different species.
Symbiotic Relationships Species interactions. What is symbiosis? Long term partnership between members of different species.

Is it Commensalism, Mutualism, or Parasitism?
Interactions in ecosystems
Community Interactions. Community interactions, such as competition, predation, and various forms of symbiosis, can powerfully affect an ecosystem.
Do Now – Level 0 EMI 402. What is symbiosis? What it means: Two organisms of different species that live together At least one of the organisms benefits.
Survival Relationships
Ecological Relationships. Competition and Predation Competition – occurs when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use an ecological.

Aim: How do symbiotic relationships differ? DO NOW 1.Describe what you see in this image. 2.Do you think this fish is being harmed? Explain why or why.

Interactions Between Species

Engage Symbiotic Circle

Explore Clip 1 Clip 2 Clip 3 Write down in your own words the way the organisms relate to one another in the videos Who is benefited, harmed, or neither?

Explain Symbiotic Relationships Commensalism: One organism is benefitted by relationship and the other is neither harmed nor benefitted. Mutualism: Both organisms are benefitted by relationship and neither are harmed Parasitism: One benefits and the other is harmed. Predation: One organism preys or hunts the other organism.

Parasitism Leeches attach to host organism and suck its blood! The host is harmed and the leech is benefited by a free meal!

What’s the relationship? Woodpecker and Tree ants In the spring, the southern Rufous woodpecker and the black tree ant truce for a short while during egg laying. The ants protect the bird’s eggs from attacks by the nest The bird protects the ants’ nest from other birds while the chosen bird is nesting there.

What’s the relationship? Cattle Egrets and Cattle Livestock movement cause insects to stir up in grazing fields. As the insects are stirred up, the cattle egrets following the livestock catch and feed upon them.

What’s the relationship? Oxpecker and Zebra Oxpeckers obtain a meal while the Zebra is freed of lice, ticks, and flees.

What’s the relationship? Plover Bird and Crocodile While obtaining a meal, the Plover bird cleans the crocodile’s teeth and helps prevent infections.

Evaluate A symbiotic relationship that occurs when both member benefit is called?

Spanish Moss on Tree The Spanish moss benefits, but the tree is neither harmed or benefited.

Which best represents mutualism? Bull snake/mouse White-tailed deer/grass Hummingbird/blossom Spadefoot toad/cricket

What symbiotic relationship is it? An oakworm catepillar feeds on the leaves of an oak tree. This type of interaction is:
