UNIT 1 VOCABULARY The Real number system

Real numbers Any number that can be placed on a number line

irrational numbers A real number that can NOT be made by dividing two integers

rational numbers A real number that can be made by dividing two integers

integers A positive or negative whole number, a number with no fractional or decimal part

whole numbers The numbers {0,1,2,3,….} and so on

natural numbers Counting numbers {1,2,3,…}

radical An expression that has a square root, cube root, etc. The symbol is √

radicand The value inside the radical symbol. The value you want to take the root of

Square root A number that when multiplied by itself gives the value of the radicand

Cube root A number that when multiplied by itself three times yields the radicand

Perfect square A value made by squaring a whole number

Terminating decimal A decimal that had digits that do not go on forever; a finite decimal

Repeating decimal A decimal that has one or more digits that repeat infinitely

truncate To shorten, round or cut off
