Presentation transcript:

Galileo Math Learning Series Session 1 -The first presentation is going to focus on developing a deeper sense of the number line, why it is important in terms of developing number sense, and ways that you could use this in your classroom.

Number Instructions: String (number line) Each person with a number card. Find your place on one of the number lines. -Hand out the cards to each group and ask the staff to place the numbers on the number line in the correct location -Prompt the staff to consider positionality and magnitude (i.e. spacing) -Discuss with the staff that the number line is appropriate for teaching number sense because it encourages students to think about numbers as a whole system (i.e. numbers in between, position of different “types” of numbers, knowledge builds from the previous years) -Questions to discuss in small groups: 1. How do you use the number line in the classroom? 2. Based on the activity, do you have any new ideas how to include the number in your daily plans? Measurement, Patterns, Operations ...

Interesting Numbers Idea from session: As a table group, identify a number that you find particularly interesting. Find out everything you can about it. Record research. -Discuss that numbers have certain appeal to certain people and it is important to develop this appreciation within our students -One activity that we did at Galileo was to pick a certain number on the number line and research this based on our interest or curiosity. -Discuss number stories about phi and 0 -Share about my class discussion about 0 and our interest and intrigue about this number.

Types of Numbers Rational Irrational Whole Natural Integers -Using the sticky notes and chart paper, sort the numbers based on their category -It is important that students understand the connection between the number systems as they move up the grades in order to understand the connection between numbers to deepen number sense. Students tend to believe that fractions/decimals are unrelated to natural or whole numbers. These activities help them to deepen that understanding.

Challenge Over the next month, how can you implement or bring alive the number line consistently in your classroom? We are looking for evidence of student work around the number line to be shared with staff in 3-4 weeks. -Present challenge

Scope and Sequence The beginning stages of the new Mathematics Program of Studies can be found by searching “Alberta Mathematics Scope and Sequence”. https://education.alberta.ca/media/3653317/00-alberta_math_k- 12_scope_sequence-2017.pdf -One page of the Scope and Sequence of the proposed Mathematics Program of Studies was shared with us at Midnapore School. The full document can be found by searching it online. Please be aware that this is still said to be in the developing phase.
