INJECTION MOLD DESIGN PDT 317 Sinopsis kursus/ Course synopsis: This course introduces students to basic knowledge of plastic injection mould. This module focuses on the actual step in designing mold starts with procedure in designing plastic products, procedure in designing plastic injection mould, analyses of material flow in plastic injection mould and continuing producing the assembly drawing of plastic injection mould to produce a plastic product. “Kursus ini memperkenalkan kepada pelajar-pelajar pengetahuan asas berkaitan acuan suntikan plastik. Modul ini memberi penumpuan kepada kaedah sebenar dalam mereka bentuk acuan suntikan plastik bermula daripada prosedur merekabentuk produk plastik, prosedur merekabentuk acuan suntikan plastik, analisis aliran plastik ke dalam acuan suntikan plastik seterusnya menghasilkan lukisan pemasangan acuan suntikan plastik untuk menghasilkan produk plastik.”

INJECTION MOLD DESIGN PDT 317 COURSE OUTCOMES, CO CO1: Ability to DISCUSS basic terminology process in plastic injection molding and mould design. CO2: Ability to DESIGN the plastic parts for injection moulding process. CO3: Ability to EVALUATE the plastic flow into injection mould by using commercial software. CO4: Ability to DESIGN the mould for plastic injection moulding by using 3D CAD software.

INJECTION MOLD DESIGN PDT 317 Study Week Course Content 1 – 2 CHAPTER 1: Introduction to Plastic Technology DEFINE and EXPLAIN the basic terminology process flow in plastic injection molding; EXPLAIN the differentiate type of mould, EXPLAIN, REVIEW and REPEAT the detail about injection molding machine. 3-5 CHAPTER 2: General Mould Construction Concept EXPLAIN material in fabricate mould, types of gates, runner and venting; EXPLAIN and DESCRIBE the design of lifter, side pull, parting line, insert mould base size, engraving and texturing process. 6-7 CHAPTER 3: Designing Product with Plastics DEFINE, EXPLAIN and DISCUSS in selected suitable type of polymeric material for producing product, product design consideration, product defect after injection process. 8 CUTI PERTENGAHAN SEMESTER/MID SEMESTER BREAK 9-11 CHAPTER 4: Injection Mould Design DEFINE and EXPLAIN type of mold to produce for selected designed product; DESIGN core, cavity, runner, gate, cooling channel, ejection system and assembly drawing; EXPLAIN and APPLY selected the standard part using catalog provided. EXPLAIN and DISCUSS the machining processes involved in mould fabrication. EXPLAIN, REPEAT and DISCUSS CADCAM, EDM-Wire cut, CNC-Milling. 12-13 CHAPTER 5: Moldflow Analysis EXPLAIN and APPLY using Mold Flow software in plastic flow simulation inside cavities. INTERPRET the gate position, runner size and gate size. 14-15 CHAPTER 6: Injection Moulding Calculation CALCULATE and COMPARE the shot and plasticizing capacity, the cycle time, the clamping force and mould cost. 16 MINGGU ULANGKAJI / REVISION WEEK 17-19 PEPERIKSAAN AKHIR SEMESTER / FINAL EXAMINATION

INJECTION MOLD DESIGN PDT 317 Study Week Lab Content 1 – 2 Draw 3D for the part given. Decide the appropriate parting line. Making taper or draft angle at the cavity and cores side. Parting Line 3-4 Making core and cavity insert 5-6 Draw sub-insert, cooling channel, ejector pin hole and gating system. 7 Assembly Drawing 3D 8 CUTI PERTENGAHAN SEMESTER/MID SEMESTER BREAK 9 Assembly Drawing 2D 10 Draw slider/side pull and angular pin/lifter for the part selected. 11-13 Moldflow Plastic Insight 15 Presentation & Submit Report 16 MINGGU ULANGKAJI / REVISION WEEK 17-19 PEPERIKSAAN AKHIR SEMESTER / FINAL EXAMINATION
