Requirements for Plant Growth and Development Agri-science Mr. Bailey

Your TASK!!!! Make a list of requirements for basic survival You have two minutes shelter, water, food, air, and clothing

Your TASK!!!! Pretend you are plant List the requirements for survival You have two minutes soil, water, nutrients, air, and light Compare the two lists

What is meant by growing media? Growing media: whatever material a plant grows in and gets nutrients from May be soil or a soil substitute such as peat moss, perlite, or even water.

What is meant by growing media? Place for its roots to grow and a place from which it can absorb nutrients The media acts as a shelter for the plant by giving it a place to grow, just as humans must have a place to live.

What nutrients do plants need? Just as humans need food to survive, plants need nutrients to grow. Plants need three main nutrients: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium N, P, and K From the media in which they grow, but more nutrients may need to be added

What is water's role in a plant's life? Plants get the water they need in several ways: 1) Directly from rain, irrigation, misting, or a bucket 2) Absorb it through their roots 3) Absorb water that is in the air Water in the air is called humidity. Talk about wilting and how it relates to people’s skin

What is a plant's relationship with air? Plants clean the air Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and use it to produce food They give off oxygen as a by-product of this activity.

What is light's role in a plant's life? Must have light in order to make food and they must have food to live. The process of making food from light is called: photosynthesis and takes place in the plant's leaves. The amount of light affects whether or not the plant will bloom. Plants can live in either sunlight or artificial light.

Activity Time!!!!!!! Your group will construct a garden terrarium using one of the following: Plastic 2 litter bottle 1 gallon Milk jug 20 oz. Plastic soda bottle

Conclusion Plants and humans have very similar needs for survival. Remembering what people need in order to live can serve as a reminder of what plants need.

Exit Slip What are the growing media’s, air, water, and light’s role in a plant’s life? What are the three nutrients required for plant growth?
