SATs Meeting

SATs – May 2018 In the week beginning Monday 14th May 2018, your child will be taking national SATs papers. Tests will be in: Maths Reading GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling - SPAG)

SATs – Timetable Date Tests Mon 14th May 2018 English – Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling Test: Short answers (45 mins) English – Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling Test: Spellings Tues 15th May 2018 English – Reading Test (60 mins) Wed 16th May 2018 Maths – Arithmetic Test Paper 1 (30 mins) Maths – Reasoning Paper 2 (40 mins) Thurs 17th May 2018 Maths – Reasoning Paper 3 (40 mins)

Maths The mock papers we completed before February half term will be sent home. My Maths has a range of revision resources that can be used at home and we have and will continue to set some focused tasks.

Reading How can you help? Listen to your child read, especially if they are not fluent. Encourage them to stretch themselves with more complex books or a greater variety. Discuss your child’s book with them (or what you are reading). Talk about the plot and character development, meanings of unfamiliar words, what they enjoy and interested in.

Writing This will be assessed by your child’s teacher. The ‘Expected Standard’ is challenging – it requires children to use the passive voice and examples of more complex punctuation (e.g. semi-colons and colons) in their independent writing.

How can you help? Homework will be sent home on a regular basis. From time to time there may be specific areas that a teacher identifies for your child or a small group to work on. A short extra challenge may be set for them to complete. There won’t be any more home learning projects to support the integrated curriculum until after the tests. The targets on your child’s reports will advise you of their individual needs. Take advantage of our book offer!

Exemplars

Writing Working at the expected standard • creating atmosphere, and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action • selecting vocabulary and grammatical structures that reflect the level of formality required mostly correctly • using a range of cohesive devices, including adverbials, within and across sentences and paragraphs sentences and paragraphs • using passive and modal verbs mostly appropriately • using a wide range of clause structures, sometimes varying their position within the sentence • using adverbs, preposition phrases and expanded noun phrases effectively to add detail, qualification and precision • using mostly correctly: inverted commas, commas for clarity, punctuation for parenthesis • making some correct use of: semi-colons, dashes, colons and hyphens • spelling most words correctly* (year 5 and 6) • maintaining legibility, fluency and speed in handwriting through choosing whether or not to join specific letters.

SATs – May 2018 In July, you will receive your child’s SATs scores. There are no longer any levels or sub-levels. The score will be scaled, with 100 being the score of being seen to meet expectations. You will also receive a teacher assessment of whether your child is working towards or meeting expectations in the Maths, English and Science.

Scaled Scores

Communication If we can help in a five-minute end-of-day chat, please catch us on the playground, after we’ve dismissed all the children. If you have any concerns and worries about your child and their progress, or anything positive or important that would be helpful for us to know, please come and see us! Thank you for coming!
