Equivalent Expressions Skill Objective: EQUIVALENT EXPRESSIONS The student will know how to find an equivalent expression to the given expression by solving each expression and finding the expressions that are equal by completing multiple choice questions. Mrs. Kennel

Lets do an activity!!! Balance It Materials: 20 counters per student, paper cup, sheet of paper with line and equal sign drawn down the middle Procedure: c + 3= 11 Partner 2: Place 11 counters on the right side of the paper. Partner 1: Place 3 counters in the cup on the left side.

Lets do an activity cont… How many counters do I have to put in the cup so the equation is balances? 8 What is the value of c? Do you now have to same number of counters on both sides? (yes; 8+3=11) Lets try it for d-5=10

What is an Expression? An expression names an amount. Example: 4 x 5 10 – 9 72 ÷ 8 465 + 100

What about Equivalent Expressions? What does equivalent mean? Equivalent- equal Equivalent Expressions- expressions that are equal

Equivalent Expressions I am going to give you an expression: 4 +4 How many equations can you find that are equivalent to 4+4?

How many ways to 12?!?! CHALLENGE!!!!!!!! Divide a sheet of paper in four sections. Label the sections with Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. Ask them how many different ways they can make the number 12. Fill in numbers in the section to try to add, subtract, multiply, and divide to equal 12. Have the students share their responses and allow students to copy equivalent expressions that they didn’t have written on their paper.

Addition to get to 12 Subtraction to get to 12

Multiplication to get to 12 Division to get to 12
