The High Priests were seen as the primary leaders in Israel during the first part of this time period, with some trying to pursue righteousness…but with most giving in to greed and selfish ambition while the nation suffered.

* This took place from 171-164 B.C. The Maccabees were a family of righteous Jews that led a revolt against Antiochus IV after he ransacked the Temple and placed the “abomination that causes desolation” (which was an idol-altar to the god Jupiter) on the altar of burnt offerings. After many miraculous victories, the Temple was cleansed 6 ½ years later in fulfillment of the prophecy of Daniel. * This took place from 171-164 B.C.
