Lifestyle Factors that affect Sports Training and Performance On your OWN, what factors you think affect sports training and performance. Complete the table below:- Factors Effect on sports training Employment, part time work Not enough time to train Increase levels of stress

Lifestyle Factors that affect DIET STRESS DRUGS SPORTS PARTICIPATION CULTURE DEMANDS OF WORK Lifestyle Factors that affect Sports Training and Performance ALCOHOL SLEEP SMOKING GENDER MEDICAL HISTORY

STRESS May occur if the performer thinks that they can’t meet the demands of the activity Can be both positive or negative. Positive can help the performer do well whereas negative stress can cause them to under perform. Example a gymnast maybe worried about performing in front of a large audience therefore experiences negative stress – Anxiety A gymnast who enjoys the feelings created when performing a complex vault experiences – Eustress When stress occurs the body releases adrenalin and this gives the body an energy boost. Too much adrenalin can cause the hands to shake and lack of control Example a footballer can mistime a tackle.

DIET Eating well improves sports performance. Eating well is specific to you as not all diets suit everyone. Your diet must meet the demands of the sport. Example Distant runners need to consume large amounts of carbohydrates as these contain lots of energy. Athletes that need strength, like rugby players will eat more protein to help build muscle. Reduces the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. A balanced diet must consist of: Carbohydrates Fats Proteins Fibre Minerals Water Vitamins It is important that performers eat the right foods, at the rights times and in the right quantities.

ALCOHOL AND SMOKING ALCOHOL SMOKING Slows down reaction time Lungs work less effectively Affects the bodies ability to turn Tobacco produces carbon food into energy monoxide which prevents Slows down your brain the blood from picking up processing Information oxygen Affects your balance and Chemicals affect your blood Coordination and accuracy circulation Can cause dehydration Less energy as blood vessels become smaller so carry less oxygen

SLEEP Too much or too little can cause a decline in the performance of the brain. Can affect concentration, flexibility, decision making and information processing. Should have at least 8 hours sleep each night. It is important for the body to rest and recuperate. Sleep stimulates the realise of growth hormones, this helps cell growth. Sleep deprivation can lead to stress therefore effects performance and tissue repair and growth.

DRUGS All drugs have side effects and can reduce fitness levels and be harmful to health. Sports performers and athletes regularly undergo testing for illegal substances. The National Governing Body of sport and UK Sport are responsible for making decisions about who gets tested and when. Drug abuse can lead to death. Some medicines are banned in some sports but not in others. Athletes need to be careful what they take as cold and flu remedies for some sports are banned. Depending on their sport athletes who suffer from asthma or diabetes will need permission to take their medicine to ensure they are not breaking any rules.
