FirstGroup 19,500 Employees 36,000 Vehicles 7,5000 Employees
Background As we emerge into this new world of Zero Emission Buses, we need to create room for a successful contract. Environment: The contract is a guide to a partnership between the agency and the contractor. PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL
Contracting Leadership Communication must be a two-way street Both parties must be open and frank with each other Build trust If something new (like ZEB) is introduced mid-contract, anticipating all of the details may not be possible Be flexible Look to the bus vendor for help and assistance Involve the contractor in this process as much as possible
Contract Traps Absolute compliance without consideration to changing circumstances “Telling” not communicating Failure to openly discuss issues Agency operations personnel not involved in contract modifications Taking action too late when a problem arises Audi, Volkswagen and Toyota are car companies testing their autonomous creations
Where to Begin Talk to your peers, contractor and use industry tools CalTrans and FTA have local offices that will advise FTA Circulars are yours for simple a web search TCRP publications Your contractor has likely seen it all Your state transportation associations
Conclusion Communicate openly Build a partnership Treat the contract as a growing, living thing that helps both parties
