TOPIC SENTENCE In an ESSAY : Every paragraph should include a topic sentence. Generally, the topic sentence appears at the beginning of the paragraph. It is often the paragraph’s first sentence.

Topic Sentence = Topic + Controlling Idea Every topic sentence will have a topic and a controlling idea. The topic provides a focus for the reader. It tells what the paragraph is about. The controlling idea helps the reader understand what you want to communicate about the topic.
