The Characteristics of Cells Unit 1 Lesson 1 7th Grade Biology

What is a cell? The smallest functional and structural unit of all living organisms. Organism - any living thing that carries out its own life processes. Robert Hooke - first to describe cells (bark of a cork tree)

Robert Hooke

Robert Hooke (1635-1703) Built a compound microscope screw-operated focusing mechanism water-lens beside the microscope focused light from an oil-lamp on to specimens

1963

Why are most cells small? Cells size is limited by outer surface area.

Balloon Example

If the length of one side is 2 what is the surface area and what is the volume of this cube? What is the surface area to volume ratio?

Classwork Activity DO THE MATH: Turn to page 7 and complete this activity

HW Complete the Vocabulary and Critical Thinking sections of the Lesson 1 Review on Page 13

Theodor Schwann, Rudolf Virchow, or Matthias Schleiden DO NOW!!! Who is Who!!! Read Page 8 then try to match the name of the scientists to their face. Anton van Leeuwenhoek Robert Hooke 1 2 3 Theodor Schwann, Rudolf Virchow, or Matthias Schleiden

Who Created the Cell Theory!!! Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first to describe living cells. Matthias Schleiden concluded that all plants are made of cells.

Who Created the Cell Theory!!! Theodor Schwann determined that all animal tissues are made of cells. Rudolf Virchow proposed that cells could form only from the division of other cells. Visualize It – Turn to Page 8 and complete this activity.

2 types of cells Unicellular – organisms made up of 1 cell Carries out all life functions of the organism Multicellular – organisms made up of more than 1 cell cells have specialized functions .

Parts all cells have in common!!! A cell membrane – a protective layer that covers a cell’s surface and controls materials moving into and out of the cell. Cytoplasm - area inside the cell that includes the fluid and all the organelles except for the nucleus.

Cell Membrane Made up of a phospholipid bilayer - thin membrane made of two layers of lipid molecules

Phospholipid Bilayer

Parts all cells have in common!!! Organelles - small bodies in the cytoplasm that is specialized to perform a specific function. Nucleus - membrane-bound organelle that contains DNA. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) - genetic material that provides instructions for all cell processes.

Classroom Activity With your group create a detailed picture of a cell and all the common parts we just learned about!! Parts Cell Membrane Cytoplasm DNA and Nucleus Label and describe each part. Leave space in cytoplasm!!!

HW Read Page 11 and complete the Visualize It Activity!

DO NOW!!! Which one is which? Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?

What are the two types of cells?

Prokaryotes Single-celled – NO nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. DNA in cytoplasm Organelles without cell membranes called ribosomes. Hair like structures called flagella – help movement

Eukaryotes Cells contain DNA in a nucleus Membrane-bound organelles Ribosomes. Animals, plants, protists, and fungi Most multicellular / some unicellular.

Eukaryotic Cell

Prokaryote vs Eukaryote Venn Diagram Activity Create a Venn Diagram to organize differences and similarities between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Make sure to list the organelles and parts of a cell we learned about

HW Complete the Key Concepts part of the Lesson Review in your book on Page 13 and the Visual Summary on Page 12.

DO NOW: Complete this activity With your group create a detailed picture of a cell and all the common parts we just learned about!! Parts Cell Membrane Cytoplasm DNA and Nucleus Label and describe each part. Leave space in cytoplasm!!!

Unit 1 Lesson 1

Lab Activity 2 Look at Cardiac Muscle cells and the motor neuron cells under the microscope. Sketch what you see, label the parts, and answer the questions
