Types of Endings A good ending is one which leaves the reader satisfied. It can do this in a number of ways. An ending might: Tie up all the ‘loose’ ends of the story Answer all the questions in the reader’s mind Bring a resolution to the problem Offer a surprise Have a ‘twist in the tail’ A line of dialogue Some more sophisticated stories even have an OPEN ending where the problem appears to be unresolved and the reader is left with questions.

Think/Pair/Share Think of a book or film that had one of these endings and make some notes about it in your copy book. What made it exciting? Pair up with the person sitting across from you and share your ideas.

Group Task Read the extract from the middle of a short story. Read the possible endings provided. Only one is the correct ending. Discuss in your group which ending is most satisfying and give reasons for your choice. REMEMBER: each group should have a chairperson, reporter and timekeeper. Everyone MUST be a recorder for this task.

Paired Work Read the endings to some famous stories that have been provided on the sheet. Fill in the table, matching them to the type of endings listed. Give reasons for your answer (might want to quote and/or explain in own words).
