GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION Please use appropriate pictures (the ones here are just as an example)

2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS AGENDA 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4. SENDING A MESSAGE

GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION MOTIONS REQUIRE A PLAN FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER SHORT & SIMPLE <1MIN RANDOM NUMBERS IF NECESSARY ANALOGIES PREFERABLY BE CAREFUL WITH EXCEPTIONS SHORT & SIMPLE <1MIN RANDOM NUMBERS IF NECESSARY- e.g. THW lower the voting age, say that you lower it to a reasonable 15-16, so as to make it clear where we are working. ANALOGIES PREFERABLY BE CAREFUL WITH EXCEPTIONS- did anyone find out what Viktor Finkel messed up in the WUDC abortion finals? Well, it’s this. You damage your principle stance by making exceptions, so make sure they are aligned with what you’re saying. 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION MOTIONS REQUIRE A PLAN QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF HOW WILL THIS WORK? (BEST USE ANALOGY) HOW CAN YOU ENFORCE IT? WHAT WILL BE THE PUNISHMENT/REWARD? WILL THERE BE ANY EXCEPTIONS? WHY? DOES THE PLAN HAVE DRAWBACKS? CAN THE PLAN MITIGATE THOSE DRAWBACKS? IS THE PLAN MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE WITH OTHER POLICIES? 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

THW DECRIMINALIZE ALL DRUGS HOW WILL THIS WORK? (BEST USE ANALOGY) Use the same mechanism as The Netherlands WILL THERE BE ANY EXCEPTIONS? WHY? Cases when there is clear 3rd party harm, e.g. traffickers may still be punished DOES THE PLAN HAVE DRAWBACKS? CAN THE PLAN MITIGATE THOSE DRAWBACKS? Increased use of drugs, but at the same time people less likely to get stigmatized for it, hence more likely to seek treatment. IS THE PLAN MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE WITH OTHER POLICIES? Not really. 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS GOVERNMENT CAN TAKE ACTION IN MULTIPLE WAYS, E.G. INTRODUCING PUNISHMENTS OR POSITIVE INCENTIVES, EDUCATING, FORCING GOVERNMENT ACTION LIMIT FORCE PERSUADE INCENTIVIZE 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

JUSTIFICATIONS FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION 1.CORRECTING INJUSTICE Disability is not earned. Society is unjust-we can make it just 2.OURS TO TAKE We gave it- we can take it away. E.g. property rights only exist because of state. 3.FREEDOM MAXIMIZATION Drugs may be an expression of freedom now, but limit freedom in future. 4.HAPPINESS MAXIMIZATION Redistribution. 1$ for a homeless man gives more happiness than a rich man. 5. EGALITARIANISM Forbidding radical parties maximizes equality overall, despite limiting political participation on an equal basis. 6.HARM Direct (passive smoking), indirect (beauty standards), excessive harm to oneself. 7.IRRATIONAL CHOICE Choice to refuse life saving treatment is made it circumstances of pain, hopelessness , etc more often than not- it is not a rational choice. 8. MARKET INEFFICIENCY Externalities, public goods , collective action 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

THW BAN ALL VIOLENT SPORTS (E.G. BOXING, MARTIAL ARTS) EXAMPLES OF JUSTIFICATIONS THW BAN ALL VIOLENT SPORTS (E.G. BOXING, MARTIAL ARTS) JUSTIFICATIONS HARM TO ONESELF SOCIAL (INDIRECT) HARM THROUGH NORMALIZATION OF VIOLENCE IRRATIONAL CHOICE (MOST ATHLETES START AS CHILDREN) 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

THW PUNISH PEOPLE WHO MAKE RACIST COMMENTS EXAMPLES OF JUSTIFICATIONS THW PUNISH PEOPLE WHO MAKE RACIST COMMENTS JUSTIFICATIONS DIRECT HARM TO ANOTHER THROUGH OFFENSE INDIRECT HARM TO SOCIETY THROUGH NORMALIZING RACISM MORE EQUALITY, DESPITE LIMITING EQUALITY IN FREEDOM OF SPEECH MORE FREEDOM BECAUSE SPEECH ACTS CAN ALSO TAKE FREEDOM FROM PEOPLE 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

THW INTRODUCE PROGRESSIVE TAXATION EXAMPLES OF JUSTIFICATIONS THW INTRODUCE PROGRESSIVE TAXATION JUSTIFICATIONS What the rich aquire, they acquire unjustly (something is unjust- we can make it just) The only reason the rich can be rich is because our economic system benefits them (what we give we can take away) The freedom of the rich is not impacted much by us reducing their wealth, but the poor gain a lot more from redistribution (autonomy maximization) Poor gain more happiness per EUR (happiness maximization) 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

THW CENSOR RACIST WEBSITES SENDING A MESSAGE: WHAT’S PROBLEMATIC ABOUT THESE? THW BAN SURROGACY Women cannot make rational decisions about their bodies THW CENSOR RACIST WEBSITES Racial minorities cannot defend themselves and need to be protected THW GIVE EXTRA WELFARE TO POOR FAMILIES WHOSE CHILDREN PERFORM WELL IN SCHOOL It’s the fault of the families if they’re children don’t perform well in school Very often young debaters make ‘government message’ arguments, there is a way to elevate those arguments to very strong ones by just changing the way you speak about them. 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

THE NARRATIVE THAT GOVERNMENT PROMOTES SENDING A MESSAGE: HOW TO MAKE GOOD GOV MESSAGE ARGUMENTS THE NARRATIVE THAT GOVERNMENT PROMOTES HOW WILL IT BE INTERPRETED? WHY WILL IT BE INTERPRETED THAT WAY? WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF SUCH AN INTERPRETATION? Instead of message say “THE NARRATIVE THAT GOVERNMENT PROMOTES” AND analyze the statement. 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

SENDING A MESSAGE: HOW TO MAKE ARGUMENTS THW GIVE EXTRA WELFARE TO POOR FAMILIES WHOSE CHILDREN PERFORM WELL IN SCHOOL HOW WILL IT BE INTERPRETED? THE POOR ARE THEMSELVES TO BLAME FOR THE FACT THAT THEIR CHILDREN PERFORM POORLY OF SCHOOL (RE-DISTRIBUTES BLAME FROM THE GOVERNMENT TO POOR FAMILIES). WHY WILL IT BE INTERPRETED THAT WAY? BECAUSE THAT IS THE MOST CONVENIENT INTERPRETATION FOR THE MAJORITY (NO ONE WANTS TO FEEL GUILTY). WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF SUCH AN INTERPRETATION? LIMITS THE POSSIBILITY OF MEANINGFUL CHANGE IN THE SYSTEM, BECAUSE THEY FEEL BLAME LESS, LESSENS POLITICAL CAPITAL. 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE

IN SUMMARY WHY THE GOVERNMENT HAS/DOESN’T HAVE A RIGHT/OBLIGATION TO REALIZE THIS POLICY? WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT HAVE AN INTEREST TO REALIZE THIS POLICY? JUSTIFICATIONS FOR INTERVENTION NARRATIVE ARGUMENTS HOW WILL IT BE INTERPRETED? WHY WILL IT BE INTERPRETED THAT WAY? WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF SUCH AN INTERPRETATION? 1.CORRECTING INJUSTICE 2.OURS TO TAKE 3.FREEDOM MAXIMIZATION 4.HAPPINESS MAXIMIZATION 5. EGALITARIANISM 6.HARM 7.IRRATIONAL CHOICE 8. MARKET INEFFICIENCY 1. CREATING A PLAN 2. TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS 3. LEGITIMACY & JUSTIFICATION 4.SENDING A MESSAGE
