FXU Committee Training Running your Student Led Project

The words you have all be longing to hear….. Let’s have some FUN!

Session aims: To refresh on the basics of leading a Student Led Volunteer Project. Network and learn from each other what has or hasn’t worked well. Gain some new ideas for the year ahead. Leave the room feeling pumped!

Why volunteer?

What did volunteers gain from volunteering in 2016-17?

Your Roles and Responsibilities Organising activities Recruiting, motivating, managing and retaining volunteers Positive role model Training Arranging socials Reporting regularly to the FXU Attending regular project team meetings Ensuring the safety & welfare FXU website & social media To make sure that everyone has fun! Project Funding – CHANGES NEXT YEAR!! Initial Grant £150 grant to assist with project set-up. Keeping in line with charity law. Making the most of your charity partner (merchandise, transport cost, equipment and marketing) Items purchase will always belong to FXU (eg. Flicka’s kit)   Future funding Not all our groups use or need this funding After this year the £150 will only be given to new SLVP’s. A bigger pot to bid for Operating like a charity organisation All SLVP’s will need to use this year to collect evidence of their activities which can be used to seek additional sponsorship, grants and support to help sustain their projects.

Making your project amazing! Aims What do you want achieve this year? What do you improve or increase? Objectives Objectives are activities that you be doing to achieve your aims. Evaluate How will the success be measured? Increase in membership? Activity? Feedback?

Question 1 Discuss your groups aims for the year? Are they all similar? Question 2 Find out what creative ways each group is going to achieve these aims. Question 3 How might you evaluate the success of these aims?

Volunteer Recruitment Recruiting a good number of volunteers each year is very Important for project longevity and funding. VOLUNTEER FAYRE – Tuesday 10th October, 4-6pm. 3 Campuses of potential volunteers… Penryn, Falmouth and Truro. Freshers’ SEPTEMBER! TASTER, TASTER, TASTER Not just social media...how about student media? Falmouth Anchor & FXU Radio. Collaboration with Sports Clubs, Societies or Courses. (Team building sessions?) Shout about your activities. Tag FXU Activities and FXU on Facebook. Student Volunteering Week – Monday 19th – Sunday 25th February 2018. Promo Videos

Keeping your volunteers “ You can’t expect someone to do the job well if you don’t given them the tools to do it.” Keeping your volunteers Induction and training. Make it clear what your expectation of them is from the start. Well organised activities. Quality over quantity. Create strong links with your partner charity. Arrange a visit? Keep it fun! Themed activities, socials, work hard play hard. When they are doing well, let them know! Volunteer of the month? Make your project volunteer led.

Your Activity Volunteering is fun! A fair sign up process. Make any cost clear before sign up. Fuel etc. Appoint someone to be in charge. Organising or just taking the reins on the day. Registering your volunteers for each session. (NUMBERS MATTER!) Events and Trip Pack and risk assessment. Volunteer briefing each time

Scenario Your group are planning to get in the FXU minibus, heading off to Snowdonia National Park to volunteer with a Age Uk, assisting the elderly to live their life long dream of climbing a mountain. You will have a celebratory BBQ at the top and a glass of bubbly. What will FXU need for this trip to go ahead? What risks might you encounter?
