COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE WORDS

SOME / ANY We usually use A/AN with COUNTABLE nouns if there is just one but with the plural form it is used SOME, specially with unspecified quantity It can be used with either countable and uncountable words BUT! Only in affirmative sentences I need to use SOME FLOUR to make the cake Anne bought SOME SOUVENIRS last holidays (Some means “Algunos” in Spanish although sometimes it doesn’t have any translation at all, it means nothing)

In negative and interrogative sentences we use ANY, either with countable and uncountable nouns I haven’t got any oil There aren’t any apple in the fridge Are you going to buy any present for Peter? (Any means “ninguno” in Spanish although sometimes it doesn’t have any translation at all, it means nothing) EXCEPTION When the question is an offer SOME can be used WOULD you like SOME homework for today? WOULD you like SOME sugar in your coffee?

COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE SOME ANY *Some (offers and requests)

MUCH – MANY – A LOT OF / LOTS OF They can be used either with countable and uncountable nouns and in any kind of sentences (Affirmative-negative-interrogative) She eats A LOT OF oranges Do you drink A LOT OF water? They mean MUCHO in spanish

MUCH It is used with UNCOUNTABLE WORDS and in negative sentences I don’t have MUCH money to buy me a new car but my best friend has got a lot of money and she has just bought a new one MANY It is used with COUNTABLE WORDS and in negative sentences There isn’t ANY apples I must go shopping later

A lot of / Much / Many Has she got many friends? Yes, she's got a lot of friends. Are there many people in the swimming pool? No, there aren't many. There are only two. Is there much ham on the plate? No, there isn't much. There are only three slices.

How Much (Cuánto / Cuánta) How Many (Cuántos / Cuántas) In questions we use how much to ask about the amount of something and therefore, with uncountable nouns How much + uncountable noun How much sugar do we need? A kilo. We use how many to ask about the number of things and so, with plural countable nouns How many + plural countable noun How many boys are there in your class? Twenty.
