audience Before start talking about the ways in which rhetoric is used try to figure out-> who is the audience -why does considering audience matter? Changes the way in which we approach argument What is audience for your paper-> what does that automatically indicate?- diction, tone, etc But also what is expected re images, citations-> genre

genre Political Satire -Uses Humor (Pathos) -Uses Sources as case studies (Logos) -Uses hyperbole (Ethos) Scholarly Essay -Uses diction & tone (Pathos) -Uses Sources to establish credibility (Ethos) -Uses primary and secondary evidence as a way of persuading (Logos)

In groups… Each group will watch for “pathos, logos, ethos” Keep track of how each are used Consider: timing, accompanying visuals, genre, audience, sources What makes these appeals so effective?

https://youtu.be/5d667Bb_iYA?t=153 2:33-3:53- uses clip of person explaining what it is like-> backs up with explanation using the rhetoric

https://youtu.be/5d667Bb_iYA?t=326 5:26-6:20 – Use of examples – do they introduce an argument or support it or develop it? – how are examples used?

https://youtu.be/5d667Bb_iYA?t=496 8:24-9:16 Counter arguments- uses to strengthen argument

https://youtu.be/5d667Bb_iYA?t=588 9:46-13:18 Shows essential flaws-> uses ethos here-> appeals to our beliefs and laws- constitution

What makes visual rhetoric? Images Used Introduction Dialogue Movement Timing Camera Transitions/Focus Sound Audience Music Setting Lighting Persona Blocking Tone of Voice Actors/Person Camera Angles Costumes visual rhetoric is not just about superior design and aesthetics but also about how culture and meaning are reflected, communicated, and altered by images. Visual literacy involves all the processes of knowing and  responding to a visual image, as well as all the thought that might go into constructing or manipulating an  image or video -come up with list -these add up to framing, genre, larger categories -

In groups… Discuss how each of these characteristics relate to your rhetorical appeal & how Oliver specifically uses them
