What is Illustration Illustration is a writing structure that utilizes examples, opinion, sample, and descriptions to explain an idea. Examples: Be Specific by Natalie Goldberg, How to Give OrdersLike a Man by Deborah Tannen, and If You Had One Day with Someone Who’s Gone by Mitch Albom

Purposes of Illustration A basic strategy of human communication Makes writing more vivid and interesting. Without this the writing can be lifeless and difficult to read. Explain and clarify ideas. This is the writers responsibility to provide these examples

Suggestions for using Illustration as a writing strategy 1. Planning your essay of illustration – take time to thoroughly think about your idea before you begin to write 2. Focus on your thesis or main idea – think about ideas that will strengthen and make your main idea more clear 3. Gather more examples than you can use – bring together as many examples as you can to start your essay off strong 4. Choose relevant Examples – make sure your examples have a strong and important meaning in your essay 5. Be sure your examples are representative – the story should be typical of the main point or concept

Organizing your essay of illustration 1. Sequence your examples logically- arrange your examples in order so they make sense and serve your propose well 2. Use transitions-link your examples to the topic sentences in your paragraph so they have a clean and understandable flow

Revising and editing your essay of illustration 1. Share your work with others- feedback can help to make your essay stronger and more understandable 2. Question your own work while revising and editing-ask yourself key questions about what you have written by re-reading your paper
