Basic Info Draft Year: 1990 by 101st Congress Amendment Years: Never Amended Level: National Agency/Group Responsible: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Functions and Effects Strengthened EPA’s ability to deal with oil spills. Requires oil storage facilities and vessels to submit detailed plans how they will respond to big oil spills. These facilities aren’t limited to ships but includes aboveground storages. Prevented Exxon from entering Alaskan waters after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Affected oil tankers entering Prince William Sound that are carrying more than 1 million gallons of oil.
