Energy Notes Unit 3

The 3 Priciples of Energy Energy can be stored. Energy can be transferred. Even after being transferred it is still energy.

We use different accounts to help us keep track of energy as its transfer causes change in the objects or in their arrangement. Nothing about the energy itself changes as it is transferred.

3 Types of Energy Accounts Thermal Energy Phase Energy Chemical Energy

Thermal Energy “Energy stored by moving particles” Movement means the speed of the particles, which is called: Temperature Thermal Energy (Eth) is based on temperature.

Phase Energy “Energy store in the system due to the arrangement of particles” Phase Energy (Eph) is based on the phase of the particles. The closer the particles are to one another the lower the Phase Energy.

Chemical Energy “Energy due to attractions of atoms within molecules” Chemical Energy (Ech) is based on the chemical bonds, so changing the chemical we are looking at changes the chemical energy. Discuss the 3 ways in which heat can be transferred.

Energy is conserved. We cannot create or destroy energy.

Icy Hot Lab You will be using a thermometer to measure the temperature of a beaker of water as it changes from solid to liquid to gas. Today we will also start exploring the changes that take place when these attracting particles of matter change for one phase to another.

Icy Hot Lab Pre-Lab: Predict what the temperature versus time graph will look like. Discuss predictions

Icy Hot Lab Procedure: 600 ml beaker filled 2/3 of ice (kept in freezer). Start recording the temperature once it stops going down on the thermometer. Move the thermometer constantly. Measure the temperature every 1 minute until the sample has boiled for 5 minutes. Let everything cool off and clean up.

Icy Hot Lab Data: Create a data table like the one below with time going from 0 to at least 25 min in 1 minute intervals: Time (in minutes) Temperature (oC) 0 minutes 1 minutes 2 minutes 3 minutes

Icy Hot Lab Post-Lab: Graph your data. (Graph paper on the front counter) The x-axis should be time. The y-axis should be temperature. Connect the points. Complete the Evaluation and Conclusion on the back of your graph.

Closure: Closure Type: Question Answer the following question in the closure section of your bell ringer sheet: What are three questions you have about the results that you got?

Continue with unit 3 notes. Post Lab Discussion: Goal of the whiteboard session: What are the parts of the graph and how energy can be continue added to the system, but temperature stays the same.   Students will participate with their desk pods to correctly label their graphs and explain how energy is added, but temperature stays the same. Board Meeting Discuss the post lab question and what is required to be complete. Continue with unit 3 notes.
