You have all been amazing Sound Consultants You have all been amazing Sound Consultants. Thank you for agreeing to help us get ready for The Great City Science Fair

The organisers have asked us to set up activities and information posters that will teach the visitors all about the science of sound. We will also have the chance to perform a few pieces to entertain the crowds. Here are a few ideas to help get you started

Vibration activity Challenge visitors to work out what sound is. Find some instruments that help to demonstrate vibrations. Remember that sometimes you can see and feel vibrations as well as hear them. Write questions for visitors on folded card Make a poster to explain what sound is and how it is transmitted. Try to use scientific words like vibrations, sound waves, transmit, medium

Activity on Pitch You could set up your tuned instrument for visitors to play. Challenge them to play a tune and think about which are the high notes and low notes. Perhaps you could make stand up signs like these with folded card. Then make a poster that explains all about pitch and how the pitch of a note can be changed.

Another activity on Pitch Make instructions that show visitors how to make panpipes with straws, tape and cardboard. Make signs that challenge them to work out the connection between the length of the pipe and the pitch of the note. Design a poster that explains all about pitch using drawings and writing.

Hearing activity Use drawings and diagrams Create a poster that explains how sounds are made, how they travel and how they are detected. Use scientific words in your explanation e.g. vibration, sound wave, energy, transmit, ear, ear drum, message, brain

Another hearing activity Ask visitors to think about animal ears. Ask them questions about why some animals need to hear really well. Write your questions on stand up cardboard signs. Challenge them to experiment with cardboard animal ears. How much better can they hear? Design a poster that explains how large ears funnel sound waves into the ear which allows animals with bigger ears to hear better.

Volume activities Write signs that challenge visitors to make the quietest sound they can and the loudest sound using a homemade instrument. Can they explain how they are doing it? Are there any other ways to make a sound quieter? Make a poster that explains all about volume and how you can change the volume of a sound. Use scientific words like: energy, vibration, vibrating object, distance, transmit, sound wave

Here is a summary of the final task to help us Choose one of the activities suggested or choose an idea of your own Collect together the things you need – items for visitors to investigate Write signs to challenge the visitors on folded card – ask them questions that they can test out Make a poster to explain the science – try to use scientific words When you have finished, set out your resources to make an attractive display. Your teacher will photograph your displays for us. If you have time you could invite some visitors of your own to explore your exhibition on sound!
