SunTrust Park Safety Winning is important to the Braves, but the most important thing for the Braves at their new SunTrust Park is patron safety. PBL AC

STANDARDS S8P1d. Distinguish between physical and chemical properties of matter PS.SPS6 Students will investigate the properties of solutions

Problem A huge problem for Suntrust Park is keeping all of the fans safe while in the park. To ensure the safety of visitors to the Braves SunTrust Park, one task for security personnel is to to identify unknown substances to determine what they are. You are in a training program to become one of the security personnel at the new stadium, and you will be learning how to identify unknown substances. In order to become certified, and get a job at the new park, you must identify unknown substances and document how you made the identification based on their physical and chemical properties.

The substances you will identify for your certification will come from the following items. The metal is one of the following: Copper Aluminum steel The clear liquid is one of the following: Water Isopropyl alcohol Salt water Hydrogen Peroxide The white powder is one of the following: Baking soda Baking powder Baby powder Cornstarch

Brainstorm What do already know about this topic? What do you need to know to solve this problem?

Training Session Agenda Lesson 1 – Physical properties Lesson 2 – Chemical properties Certification Test

Substance training samples

How is the solution presented? Complete the “Unknown Substance Analysis Report” which includes: The physical properties used to identify each The chemical properties used to identify each The identity of each substance based on the data collected from your observations and experiments How you used the physical properties to differentiate between the possible substances How you used the chemical properties to differentiate between the possible substances Pictures that support your findings
