What’s in a word? “An Hour with Abuelo” Students will identify vocabulary terms utilized in the “An Hour with Abuelo” selection in Holt Elements of Literature Follow the directions below to complete the activity. You will listen to a cold read of the selection “An Hour with Abuelo”. To do this you will follow along in the Holt Elements of Literature Textbook on page 773. As you listen to the story, you will identify vocabulary terms that are unfamiliar or unknown. You will write down these words on a sheet of paper in order to participate in a class discussion of unfamiliar terms. The class will discuss words identified during cold read. Through the course of the discussion, you will use context clues to determine the meaning of the words. You will review vocabulary words from the discussion using flash cards in Study Mate. You should review several times in order to master the terms. You will complete one activity (matching, Pick a Letter, Fill in the Blank) as the evaluation piece to determine mastery of the terminology. Be sure to show the teacher your score BEFORE you close out the activity to receive credit for the assignment. This task uses: Common Core/NG Standard(s): L.8.4- Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple- meaning words or phrases based on grade 8 reading and content, choosing flexibility from a range of strategies. L.8.6 - Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
